Stephen Hay is a painter who explores the landscape of human life through his study of both urban and natural landscapes. Whether painting au plein air or in the studio, he captures the essence of his subject matter using a complex and keen sense of light, reflection, and detail.
When he steps out of the studio and paints in a plein air alfresco style, he captures the essential aspect of a landscape and its inhabitants. His plein air work suggests a more painterly style, where the spontaneity of his brushstrokes are evident.
In contrast, his studio work moves into the realm of realism. His studio offers him the time to explore an in-depth study of a subject, which allows his paintings to develop in detail, light, and form. In his studio, he combines his individual studies to encapsulate the energy of the urban landscapes he creates.
